11. Bangladesh Delta
11.1 Bangladesh: the challenges of living in a delta country
Video duration 05:40
Water security is critical in Bangladesh due to its vulnerability to floods, droughts, and rising sea levels. The country's reliance on agriculture, frequent monsoons, and river systems like the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna make it prone to both water scarcity and excess, impacting livelihoods, food production, and health. Numerical models help predict and manage water-related issues by simulating hydrological systems. We show how a new model capturing the whole of this complex delta system can be used to predict salinity and water quality. Using models, policymakers can design strategies to improve water management, mitigate flood risks, and ensure sustainable water use in a changing climate.
