11.2 Water security and climate change impacts

Video duration 05:44

Climate change poses a significant threat to water security by disrupting the natural water cycle, leading to both shortages and surpluses of water. These disruptions affect the availability, quality, and accessibility of freshwater resources, essential for drinking, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems. Climate change is disrupting the balance of the water cycle, leading to either too much water (floods) in the wet season, and too little (droughts) in the dry season. During dry season, salt water intrusion can contaminate water supplies and increase pressure on water security. By understanding climate impacts on the river system, and environment, we can advise strategies for improved river management and agricultural practices to mitigate risks and adapt to these challenges.
