6. Emerging Fishery of the North Kenyan Bank – The Next Frontier for Food Security

6.1 Introduction to the North Kenyan Bank Fishery – Does the Mysterious Upwelling Exist?

Video duration - 06:59

The North Kenya Banks have recently emerged as a new frontier for food security and could become an economically important fishery for Kenya with improved resources and access to bigger and more powerful boats providing better accessibility.

However, little research has been done on the mechanisms supporting high fish productivity over the North Kenyan Banks with information on annual and interannual environmental variability lacking. In this video lecture you will learn about the key challenges of the scientific research of the Kenyan marine environment, about manifestations of the North Kenyan Banks upwelling and its importance for the sustainable management of the fisheries.

Dr J. Kamau - KMFRI, Kenya
