The NOC are excited to be attending Flood Expo on the 22-23 September 2021. Flood Expo is a unique two-day event hosted at the NEC in Birmingham, which connects flood professionals, local authorities, government agencies and key decision-makers with the very latest knowledge and products helping to advance flood prediction, prevention, response and recovery.
As part of the event, the NOC’s Dr Jenny Brown will present WireWall, a new innovation in flood defense technology that provides a cost-effective system to help optimize sea defense design and early warning processes. Jenny’s expertise are specifically in coastal flood and erosion hazard assessment to inform shoreline management strategies. The WireWall solution reduces flood defense construction costs, can nowcast hazard information and ultimately protects coastal communities.
Layton Quinton, Head of Marine Information Products and Services at the NOC will talk about how from the early pioneering work of Dr Arthur Doodson, the NOC has continued to develop and refine its tidal predictive and analytical software to provide today's users with greater ease and accuracy than ever before. Layton will talk about the current marine software development work at NOC and what it can offer those working in flood defense.
WireWall is a ground-breaking system to collect wave-overtopping data to enable site-specific calibration of numerical tools used in sea defence design, flood forecasting services, and the setting of public safety tolerances for shoreline managers. WireWall is now being used, together with the NOC’s highly accurate and reliable tidal prediction software, POLTIPS, to develop a low-cost hazard monitoring system for long-term deployments using telemetry to transfer data as part of our Coastal Resistance Alerts and Monitoring Technologies (CreamT) project.
POLTIPS is part of a suite of products developed by the NOC that also includes TASK, POLPRED Offshore and our new cloud-based POLPRED Marine Applications Platform. TASK is an easy to use tidal analysis package whilst both POLPRED Offshore and POLPRED Marine Applications Platform are used to generate offshore tidal information.
These products and services are used by 100s of companies both nationally and internationally including The UK Hydrographic Office, The Met Office and the Environment Agency.
