eduroam, the international free WiFi service for education, allows its users to visit other organisations and use the same username and password to gain secure internet access as they would use at their home institution.
NOC offers the eduroam Home and Visited service on both our sites, to our own staff and to visitors.
Acceptable Use Policy
Before using the eduroam service, you must understand both these policies. Failure to abide by the policies could lead to sanctions and possible disciplinary action.
Visitors to the National Oceanography Centre sites
Before connecting to the NOC ‘Visited’ eduroam service, please ensure you have read and accept the NOC Acceptable Use Policy and the eduroam (UK) policy (above).
To connect to the eduroam service while visiting one of the NOC sites listed below, please ensure that your device has been set up correctly before your visit. Your local IT support service should be able to assist with the required configuration.
If you have not cached your username and password from your home institution, then you may be asked to enter these once connected to the eduroam service. The user credentials supplied by your device must identify your home institution, e.g., xyz@abc.ac.uk would identify user xyz from university abc.
If you encounter any problems, please contact your local IT support at your home institution for assistance.
NOC users
NOC has implemented an eduroam ‘Home’ service. This allows NOC staff visiting other eduroam sites (e.g., universities) to gain access to the eduroam Wi-Fi network automatically.
The eduroam Wi-Fi connection must be configured on your devices in advance, and you should enter your credentials at configuration time. You will then not be prompted to enter them on subsequent connection to eduroam networks.
You should connect using your NOC AD (OKTA) username and password, e.g., abcd@noc.ac.uk.
Please contact the Servicedesk by email or telephone extension 26197 (or +44(0) 023 8059 6197 outside NOC Southampton) if you have any questions about the eduroam service.
eduroam will never display a web page to request your credentials. If you are presented with such a page, you must ignore it and contact the servicedesk for guidance.
To check if you are accessing eduroam from a valid location, you can use the eduroam map to zoom in to your location and identify known providers of eduroam access.
The Eduroam companion app which documents the global eduroam estate and helps end users discover more about and navigate to venues that offer eduroam connectivity, is also available from Apple iTunes App store or Google Play for Android.
Configuration instructions for NOC Staff
The preferred method for configuring your devices is the Configuration Assistant Tool for Windows and MacOS or the geteduroam app for iOS and Android devices.
Full instructions for installing Eduroam on NOC devices can be found on the NOC Intranet (using VPN if offsite).
Members of staff are required to remove the eduroam profile from their devices when their association with the organisation ends.
