Growth in the developing economies has resulted in an increase in the global demand for minerals and energy. At the same time the actions required to mitigate and adapt to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere demand significant changes in energy generation, distribution and utilisation.
Liverpool Marine Symposium: a day exploring the science of coastal and shelf seas and their links with the global ocean
Presentations at the symposium from scientists at NOC and the University of Liverpool will consider aspects of physics, biogeochemistry and ecosystems, and their interactions with the wider Earth System.
A vision for sustained observations of the marine environment is the subject of an open meeting later this month.

Following a distinguished 35-year career working for NERC at IOS Liverpool, later to be re-branded the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory and from April 2009, the National Oceanography Centre, John Huthnance retired in January 2013.
The Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL) will host a workshop on major research topics in sea level science in order to commemorate its 80th anniversary. The workshop will be held at the University of Liverpool’s Victoria Gallery & Museum on 28 and 29 October. The workshop is free and open to all, but registration is required by 16 September.
