The aim of FOCUS is to develop global understanding of the impacts of climate change and direct human activities on the coastal ocean at the regional to local scale of human interaction.

Across the project objectives we will advance understanding of solutions towards resilience, adaptation, and mitigation of global change in the coastal ocean environment. This will be achieved through engagement with international research networks to help ensure this solution-focused research effectively delivers societal benefit.

Aim

Project objectives:

  1. Understand the risks and impacts of climate change on the coastal ocean (WP1).
  2. Understand the interactions of multiple human pressures on coastal habitats and ecosystems services, and the consequences for coastal communities around the world (WP2).
  3. Explore how nature-based and engineering-based marine solutions can contribute towards a net-zero carbon society (WP3).
  4. Develop the concept of the Global Coastal Ocean by synthesizing regional scale understanding to global scale assessments of change (WP4).

In FOCUS we will bring to bear the full range of oceanographic tools to address these pressing issues, including numerical models, satellite remote sensing, field surveys and laboratory work. Extensively we will reanalyse existing data from around the world in novel and innovative ways and we will engage with scientists from many regions (such as South and South East Asia and the Caribbean), to build on existing knowledge, in a spirit of mutual respect and transparency, freely sharing methods and data.
