The Story of Autosub

Submarine Channel Flow Dynamics – The Black Sea

Previous page Back to Timeline Next page

The primary aim of this expedition supported by the RV Pelagia sailing from Istanbul was to image the 3D structure of submarine flows passing through a rare example of an active submarine channel system in the Southeast Black Sea.

Mapping of the internal flow structure within and outside the channel was achieved using Autosub 3 supplemented by vessel-based, CTD profiling and a fixed CTD mooring in the proximal channel for the duration of the cruise. The Autosub 3 data provided the first observed field example of a subsurface hydraulic jump formed by a flow moving over a scour.
