Framework for Dynamically Consistent Deterministic Parameterization of Oceanic Mesoscale Eddies

Abstract:

This work aims at developing new approaches for parameterizing mesoscale eddy effects in eddy-permitting ocean circulation models.

Several emerging approaches will be briefly discussed to provide the context.

The idea in focus is to approximate transient eddy flux divergence in a simple way, by roughening the resolved flow field.

It is demonstrated that this works well for representing eddy backscatter maintaining the western boundary current eastward-jet extension.

Due to its utmost simplicity and dynamical clarity, the proposed approach has strong practical potential.
