Following multiple Autosub Science Workshops Peter Collar, the Project Manager, created a total of 16 reports with his team detailing science requirements, the state of readiness of the required technologies and where specific developments needed to be undertaken. These reports were confidential and to this day are still marked as confidential in the National Oceanographic Library.
Technology developments arose from these studies, and staff spent time building up their expertise through working on designs and prototypes while also managing a series of contracts with industry, universities and defence laboratories.
Phase 2 studies identified software engineering techniques and reliability as major areas for development. To this day, many underlying design features still feature in modern vehicles.
