Flow Dynamic - Strait of Istanbul

Autosub 3 travelled to Turkey to take part in a NERC-funded cruise led by Leeds University to study flow dynamics in the Bosphorus, also known as the Strait of Istanbul.

The work was carried out just north of the Bosphorus, with strict limits in place on how close the sub could be flown to its mouth.

Piri Reis, the support vessel for the mission, had an afterdeck too small to accommodate Autosub-3 so a support frame was constructed to hold the vehicle outboard of the stern.

The vehicle carried a 1200 kHz ADCP for this cruise to obtain higher resolution (0.5 m) velocity profiles in shallow water.
