Marine Systems Modelling (MSM)

Caribbean-wide online workshop on Coastal Monitoring and Modelling for Small Island Developing States

The NOC is inviting interested persons, particularly from the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS), to participate in an online stakeholder workshop on Coastal Monitoring and Modelling for SIDS.

UK ocean science and robotics to help address Western Indian Ocean food security

Tanzanian fishing market

A new project focusing on Sustainable Oceans, Livelihoods and food Security Through Increased Capacity in Ecosystem research (SOLSTICE), aims to strengthen the ability of the nine Western Indian Ocean nations to address the challenges of sustainable management of marine resources.

Biological insights to help protect coastlines

Minsmere, one of the case study locations

The first project to investigate the role of biological processes on the future evolution of the UK coastline is expected to produce valuable insights that will shape coastal protection policy. This project, called BLUE-coast, is led by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) alongside nine partner organisations.

AXA and NOC collaborate on European weather extremes

Floods

Last week AXA insurance showcased a project led by Dr Aurélie Duchez from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in collaboration with the UK Met Office, which aims to investigate the role of the ocean on European weather extremes.

New project investigates the global warming hiatus

The ocean

To investigate why the global warming trend varies from decade to decade, scientists from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) will work alongside those from nine other research organisations as part of a major new multidisciplinary research project.

Re-evaluating the energy gains from tidal power

La Rance tidal barrage in France

Renewable energy can be generated by harnessing the power from the tides, which can be predicted hundreds of years in advance. But the predicted energy gains from certain schemes have been overestimated, according to a team of researchers in Liverpool.

NOC ecosystem model chosen for UK environmental strategy

Observed vs MEDUSA-simulated primary production for northern summer (top) and northern winter (bottom) [from Yool et al., 2013]

A computer model that predicts how marine ecosystems will change into the future, developed by researchers at the National Oceanography Centre, will contribute to UK assessments of future environmental change, as well as the next Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Report.

European winter weather harder to forecast in certain years

Weather forecasters have a tougher job predicting winter conditions over Europe in some years over others, concludes a new study carried out by the National Oceanography Centre.

Proudman Lecture, Wednesday 23rd May 2012
