This project will develop a new approach to determine and quantify the environmental controls on sediment-water exchange fluxes in permeable sediments by combining geophysical measurements with benthic chamber measurements equipped with novel microfluidic nutrient sensors. This will lead to a new capability to monitor and quantify coastal biogeochemical processes in a globally important, but undersampled environment. We will apply our new tool in intertidal coastal settings along the UK South coast with different types of permeable sediments.
