During his career he has spent more than two years at sea on 25 research cruises, many of them as Chief or co-Chief scientist.

Research interests: Ocean Circulation and Climate; Global ocean heat content; Ocean Observations; Merdional fluxes and interbasin exchange of ocean properties.
Measurement techniques: hydrographic measurements; shipboard and lowered ADCP; GPS. Application of new technology to oceanographic problems. Observing the ocean using profiling floats. I have been a participant in the Argo program since its inception in 1999, and Co-Chair of the International Argo Steering Team since 2023.

Role: Researcher, Open Ocean Physics
Interests and areas of expertise: Ocean Circulation and Climate; Ocean Observations

  • SCOR WG127 on the Thermodaynamics and Equation of State of Seawater (2005–2010)
  • UK Argo Expert Group (2000–)
  • International Argo Steering Team (1999–, Co-Chair 2023-)
  • UK NERC Marine Science Peer Review Committee (1999–2002)
