Building the Future of Environmental Science
The National Oceanography Centre works in partnership with a range of prestigious Doctoral Training Programmes (DTPs) to support the next generation of environmental researchers. These programmes offer interdisciplinary training, access to world-leading expertise, and the opportunity to work on real-world challenges, from climate resilience to cutting-edge satellite technology.
Our involvement in these programmes helps ensure that NOC research and facilities support not just today’s scientific breakthroughs, but tomorrow’s scientific leaders.
FLOOD-CDT: Centre for Doctoral Training for Resilient Flood Futures
FLOOD-CDT trains future research practitioners to improve flood management in the UK and beyond. The programme equips students with the tools and mindset to translate research and innovation into practical solutions, and fosters a collaborative, inspiring learning environment for future leaders in flood science.
IGNITE: Doctoral Landscape Award
IGNITE is a NERC-funded Doctoral Landscape Award designed to prepare researchers to tackle the most pressing environmental challenges, including climate change. The programme develops the cross-sector skills needed by future leaders across business, government, and academia.
SENSE: Centre for Satellite Data in Environmental Science
SENSE is an Earth Observation DTP funded by NERC and the UK Space Agency. It brings together leading universities and industry to train PhD students in the application of satellite data and data science to environmental problems. By helping train industry-ready specialists, SENSE supports the UK’s growing role in global Earth observation science and technology.
CROCUS: Challenges, Risks, and Opportunities – Collaborating in Understanding and Solutions
CROCUS stands for “NERC Climate system and biodiversity science for Challenges, Risks, and Opportunities – Collaborating in Understanding and Solutions”. It is a partnership is led by the University of Reading with Swansea University, UKCEH, BGS, NOC, Kew, NHM, IoZ, NCAS and NCEO.
ACCE DTP: Adapting to the Challenges of a Changing Environment
the vision of this doctoral training partnership is to develop motivated, confident and multi-skilled PhD students, undertaking cutting edge research and tackling environmental science questions of global significance.
