Ocean and Earth Day 2012 is the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton’s (NOCS) event for the National Science and Engineering Week, and is run in tandem with NOC Liverpool and the University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science.

Professor receives prestigious award for research

University of Southampton Professor Eric Achterberg, who is based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, has been awarded a prestigious Wolfson Research Merit Awards by the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science.

Autonomous vehicles - a Persistent Presence at Southampton conference


Developments in the use of autonomous underwater vehicles for science and industry are the subject of an international conference which takes place in Southampton next month (September 2012) – the first time the event has been held in the United Kingdom.

Fifty years of Discovery and ocean exploration

The 50th anniversary of the launch of the Royal Research Ship Discovery will be marked on 2 July 2012. Fogle’s Atlantic swim attempt

In 2013 Ben Fogle will attempt to swim more than 3,000 miles from America to Cornwall. Supported by a yacht, Ben will need to swim more than 30 miles a day to reach his target of completing the crossing in under 100 days.
