As climate models move toward higher resolution, a critical question is the choice of the ocean component’s resolution and the representation of ocean mesoscale eddies. Should we invest in the development of climate models with an eddy-permitting (1/4) or eddy-resolving ocean (1/10)? Eddy-permitting models are expected to simulate some eddies up to the mid-latitudes, but it is unclear how eddy properties are captured. To inform this debate, we compare the surface characteristics of explicitly resolved eddies from coupled climate simulations of HadGEM3-GC3.1 with ocean resolution of 1/4 (ORCA025) and 1/12 (ORCA12).
