I will summarise how the first global integrated marine assessment (World Ocean Assessment 1) was carried out and its main findings, outlining the main obstacles that were encountered and the steps that are being taken to avoid these in the second cycle.  I will finally discuss the initial moves for the production of World Ocean Assessment 2, especially settling its scope and structure.
