Four Decades of Ocean Data
A joint Lesley Rickards and Roy Lowry valedictory seminar.
Dr Roy Lowry
"In the last 40 years a lot has changed in the worlds of computing, oceanographic data and its management. In the seminar I'll give an overview on how things were from a data management perspective between 1980 and 2010. I'll then have a brief look at how Semantic Web technologies have been harnessed in the current decade to take the description of 'what I measured' and how that relates to 'what they measured' to a new level and so prevent aggregations of oceanographic data looking like the Tower of Babel."
Dr Lesley Rickards
"I'll take a different perspective over the same 40 year period - a less technical approach - and explore how sharing marine data has changed and evolved, covering both the UK and wider international angle. This will cover some of the issues faced, difficulties, challenges, initiatives and projects - which may be policy, legal, technical, cultural or human related! Some solutions will be suggested. I'll conclude with some thoughts and questions for the future, including looking at whether we are better meeting the needs of the wide variety of academic, government, industry and general public users of our data, data democratisation, and use of social media."
