Application of Marine CSEM to Detect Mineral Deposits underneath the Seafloor

Abstract:

In the framework of the Blue Mining Project, several different marine Controlled Source Electromagnetic (CSEM)Applications were conducted at the Three-Mound area near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to detect local resistivity anomalies in the shallow sub-seafloor. These local resistivity anomalies may indicate the presence of seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) in the region. This presentation will give an overview of the appliedCSEM systems and elaborate the conditions under which the methods are effective for mineral exploration. Forward modelling and inversion studies are used to underline both strengths and weaknesses of each application in a first attempt to understand the electromagnetic data acquired during the JC138 cruise to the TAG Area in Summer 2016.
