Ocean Technology and Engineering
Our vision is to be one of the world’s top five research groups inventing, designing, building and deploying sensors, instruments and vehicles for marine science with a societal impact. These pages tell you about the instruments and sea-going vehicles that we have built, or that we operate, to give scientists the information they need to study our seas and oceans.
Five teams within the Ocean Technology and Engineering research group work on different aspects of making measurements in the ocean:
Autonomous Systems
We design, build and operate robot submarines, powered by batteries, and driven by propellers that can reliably gather information for days at a time from even the harshest ocean environments.

Sensors
We invent clever new ways of making measurements on the chemistry and plants and animals in the oceans by using advanced optical and microfluidic technology to implement miniature ‘on-chip’ chemical and biological laboratories for use on underwater vehicles and other platforms.

We are experts in making measurements in the waters around the UK, using equipment fixed to the seabed and also undersea gliders

Remote Sea Level
From accurate measurements of sea level changes due to tides, to surges of water due to storms, or to long term climate change affecting sea level as far away as Antarctica, this team provides the instruments that provide the data.

Mechanical Engineering
This large team of specialist engineers and technicians designs and makes much of the equipment used by the other teams. They know all about the harsh ocean environment that can corrode and crush.
