Boundary Layer And Sediment Transport Subgroup.
Half of the world population lives within 60 km from the coast. Coasts are projected to be exposed to increased risk due to impact of climate change on coastal erosion. With 17% of the UK coast already suffering from coastal erosion.

We combine field, laboratory experiments, and technology development, in conjunction with local and regional models to understand boundary layer and sediment transport processes in estuaries and in the coastal ocean. The aim being to improve predictive capabilities to manage and mitigate risk due to coastal erosion. An important part of our research is to look at the impact that sediment transport processes have on the coastal and estuarine ecology. Field observations and small scale numerical models provide improved process knowledge for sediment transport which are then parameterised in regional sediment transport models. These can then be applied to gain better understanding of long term morphological process. Our main research areas are: Small-scale process; the improvement of regional sediment transport; and the potential impacts of renewable energy devices.
