Technology used
Dealing with marine hazards needs technology that can detect events of concern and communicate the threat quickly to decision makes ashore. The instruments must be very robust to withstand extreme conditions, and be reliable, and must receive sustained support if part of an operational network.
A good example embodying all these characteristics is the UK national network of tide gauges used not only for tidal measurements but as part of a national coastal flooding alert system in conjunction with the Environment Agency and the Meteorological Office.
Tsunamis are a regular hazard in many places. Cooperation through the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission has enabled instruments that measure sea level to be deployed in many locations around Africa. ODINAfrica Sea Level Network benefits from NOC experience in sea-level measurements and communications.
