The National Oceanography Centre's science is focused on addressing the big issues impacting our planet. Storm surges and tsunamis are two dramatic events that can have lasting and damaging effects on our coastal landscapes and the communities living there, but everyday processes such as long-term coastal erosion can be equally devastating.
Coastal erosion
Managing erosion is of great importance, because changes in natural defense can lead to an increased risk of coastal flooding.
Bio-hazards
Ocean biohazards include natural phenomena such as harmful algal blooms, which can be highly poisonous to both man and marine wildlife
Geohazards
Submarine geohazards can pose a significant risk to life and property, as seen in the 2004 Indian Ocean and 2011 Japan tsunamis.
