Profile

Dr. David J. Hydes has over 30 years experience in environmental chemistry and oceanography. He obtained his PhD at the University of East Anglia and worked at the University of Goettingen and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution before joining the Institute of Oceanographic Science in 1980. He was responsible for the collection of nutrient data in the NERC North Sea Programme in the NSP, 1988-89 and the EU-MAST-OMEX-1 project. The NSP data set has been the European wide reference data set for models of the North Sea since then. This was followed by work for the UK government Department of the Environment (1) developing a nutrient water quality model for the North and Irish Sea (2) contributions to JONUS project and (3) The SONUS project (Southern Nutrient Study). The SONUS project work included the development of platforms from which regular measurements could be made in-situ, including the use of data buoys and fixed stations and the use of ships of opportunity . He is a leading member of the EU FP-5 "FerryBox" project partnership promoting the use of ships of opportunity to collect operational oceanographic data. This work now includes the continuous measurement of carbonate system parameters as part of the EU FP-5 project CarboOcean. A CO2 monitoring system is now being built for the Swire Group to operate on one of their round the world freighter ships. New work for DEFRA looking at the pH of UK marine waters will start in Autumn 2006.
