In shallow and coastal seas

Shallow and coastal seas are where people have their most direct impact on the sea and where the sea has its strongest direct impact on people. These seas are dynamic environments with complex ecosystems. NOC, our delivery partners and other UK agencies have a major role in understanding processes and change in the seas surrounding the UK. The overall context for these measurements is provided by the UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy.

This interactive map shows examples of research carried out with our partners in nearby seas. Programmes take place on time scales from weeks to decades, and are gradually giving a much better understanding of processes that affect us all such as storm surges, harmful algal blooms and changes in fish populations.
