In the open ocean
Measurements in the open ocean help us understand the role and function of the seas in the earth system at basin and global scale. Open ocean measurements underpin our research on the role of the oceans in climate, natural hazards and the global marine ecosystems. This effort depends on international collabration through the Global Ocean Observing System.
The interactive map shows examples of how we observe the oceans, often in collaboration with, or led by, our UK and International partners. Some measurements are required over decades to build up our understanding of ocean processes.
