RRS Discovery: 50th Anniversary of her Launch

February 06, 2012
RRS Discovery

50 years of ocean exploration

Scientists, crew and support staff, past and present, associated with the Royal Research Ship Discovery will be gathering in July to celebrate the half century of the vessel's service to UK science.

On 2 July the National Oceanography Centre Southampton will mark the 50th Anniversary of the launch of RRS Discovery.  This one day event will celebrate the scientific and technological achievements made aboard the vessel by bringing together people that have been associated with her over the years.

The day will include:

  • Guided tour of the vessel as she mobilises for a research cruise.
  • Talks highlighting the scientific and marine experiences and legacy.
  • Publication of a brochure on the Discovery, and launch of a web site.
  • An exhibition of photographs and memorabilia, including a preview of the new Discovery.

There is no charge to attend, but prior registration will required. A buffet lunch will be provided. The NOC cafeteria, with its balcony overlooking the quay, will be open all day. Please note parking on site is very limited.

Please return the registration form below, either by post or email, to Aidan Thorn.
