NOC on BBC Breakfast

June 08, 2010

Dr Jenny Brown shows students how to set up the experiment.

As part of a continuing series of Royal Society Partnership grant sponsored collaborations between NOC and Childwall School (Liverpool), Dr Matthew Palmer helped students with projects that contribute towards their ‘A’ level studies. This work caught the eye of BBC reporter Richard Westcott. He is looking at how the Royal Society and professional scientists work with students to spark their enthusiasm for science, getting them out in the field conducting experiments. The article will feature in the BBC Breakfast programme on 9 June at 06:20, 07:20 and 08:20.

Dr Matthew Palmer explains the mixing process.

Helped by Childwall teacher Mike McAteer, NOC scientist Dr Jenny Brown and PhD students from the University of Liverpool, Matthew and the students conducted a series of experiments on Crosby Beach. The beach is famous for 100 cast iron figures that make up Antony Gormley’s ‘Another Place’. This setting provided an ideal backdrop for filming, giving access to sea water and sand needed for lock-exchange, tidal mixing and sediment resuspension experiments.

The Royal Society sponsored partnership between NOC and Childwall School, led by Prof Jonathan Sharples and Mike McAteer, has been a great success. In 2008, it resulted in Childwall students presenting one of the invited displays at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition – as part of its 350-year anniversary. Collaborative projects – made possible by data from the NOC Irish Sea Observatory – covered sea level rise, eutrophication and the health of coastal waters, and the transport of freshwater into the ocean.
