Archives and Special Collections
The National Oceanographic Library holds a unique archive.
The archives and special collections include photographs, slides and other media and print based records and papers from:-

- National Institute of Oceanography (NIO)
- Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS)
- Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (Deacon Laboratory) (IOSDL)
- National Oceanographic Council
- Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC)
- National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS)
- Challenger Society for Marine Science Archives
- GEBCO (General Bathymetric Charts of the Oceans) Archives 1966-2004
- Records of the Office of Director NIO, IOS, IOSDL, SOC, NOCS
- Reimer Simonsen : Catalogue of Scientific Library on Diatoms
- WOCE (World Ocean Circulation Experiment) Project Office Archives
- Expedition reports and monographs
- Data Collections include:
- SBWR (Ship Borne Wave Recorder)
- Wave Data Reports - IOSDL (now NOCS) made measurements over a period of a year or more at a number of locations in the UK and adjacent waters. Data reports are available through MIAS and most of the data on which these reports are based are held at BODC.
Access to the archives and special collections
You will need to make an appointment to visit the library and request in advance to use materials from the archives and special collections. Access to the Archive is not permitted; materials will be brought to you in the main library.
