Senior Management Accountant (Permanent, Full Time)

About the role:

We are seeking a Senior Management Accountant within the Finance team who will play a key role in maintaining and improving a robust financial management information system for the National Marine Facilities (NMF), BODC (British Oceanographic Data Centre) and BOSCORF (British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility) within NOC.  This financial reporting is expected to underpin strategic decision making, including prioritisation of resource deployment and utilisation. 

The remit will encompass planning, budgeting and forecasting at Project, Group and Divisional level, as well as monitoring of financial performance against KPIs through clear and transparent reporting and providing financial support to key decision makers. Additionally, this role will involve assisting the Head of Finance with the interface between NOC via financial policy and procedures and our shared service provision (UKSBS).  The post holder will ensure that methods of accurate data capture to facilitate sound reporting and will cover for senior colleagues and deputise for the Head of Finance where required. The post holder will also be working as part of a team to support overall NOC and NERC strategic financial decision making, ensuring efficient use of resources to enable NOC to maximise the delivery of front line functions.

This is a permanent position offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates.


This is a Band 5 position and the starting salary will be £35,222 per annum. Depending upon skills and experience, a salary uplift and/or additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates.

Hours of Work: 

The hours of working are full time, 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

About you:

You will be a qualified CCAB Accountant with significant previous experience of providing financial advice within a complex financial environment at a senior level. You will have an excellent working knowledge of financial accounting and reporting systems (preferably with an integrated resource based accounting system) and significant Microsoft Excel experience (using formulas/pivot tables/extraction and data manipulation). You will also be a competent user of Microsoft Word and databases, ideally Microsoft Access and systems. Proven project and people management experience is essential. Experience of working in not-for-profit and/or science research organisations would be desirable. You will show independence and initiative and use your experience of setting up new procedures and processes within a financial environment. You must be able to interpret and articulate financial concepts in an understandable way to non-finance professionals, both verbally and in writing and apply professional knowledge to carry out detailed financial analyses and to develop trend and other management reporting. A key part of this role will be the ability to build long-term relationships with internal and external stakeholders and suppliers and maintain them across the wider organisation. Experience of managing and leading a team of professional staff is essential. This role will involve travelling on business to NOC and other internal/external establishments as required.
