About the role :

The Research Ship Management Group is responsible for operational management and maintenance of the UK’s mutli-disciplinary research vessels RRS James Cook and RRS Discovery. Both operate 24/7/365 world-wide, supporting marine science. The RRS James Cook is a modern research vessel delivered to NERC in 2006, while the RRS Discovery was brought into service in 2014.

Your role as Research Ship Manager will be to lead the safe and efficient delivery of these research vessels by managing and delivering the appropriate services to agreed time, cost and quality targets.

Your responsibilities will include leading and developing the establishment of suitable quality of service, safety and environmental policies, procedures and systems. You will manage ship operations to ensure compliance with all relevant marine Convention and National legislation and deputise for the DPA as required. You will be responsible for the management of all operational contingencies and emergencies involving NMF ships or staff.  As a member of the senior management team, you may be asked to represent the Associate Director of NMF on occasions. 

This is a permanent position offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates. The role will include periods of travel both within the UK and internationally.

Salary:

The salary will be £51,419 to £63,418 per annum depending upon skills and experience.

About you:

You will hold a Masters Certificate of Competency II/2 no restrictions or STCW, as amended, Certificate of Competency Chief Engineer III/2 (no restriction – motorships only).  An in-depth knowledge of ship management is essential and experience in the area of marine science would be an advantage. The role demands an excellent track record in your field.

You will have energy, drive and commitment to fulfil the vision and objectives of the organisation and be able to lead, develop and support multi-disciplined teams. Excellent communications at all levels and the ability to exercise effective judgement are key to this role.
