Ocean Engineering Technician – Sensors & Moorings Group

A vacancy has arisen for an Ocean Engineering Technician within National Marine Facilities Sea Systems Division at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team within the Sensors and Moorings Group supporting the NERC Marine Facilities Programme (MFP) through provision of safe, efficient and effective functioning of NMF-SS marine science equipment and support infrastructure, both ashore and at sea. This support will include complex marine instruments, equipment and systems.

Shore duties will include the repair, maintenance and calibration of marine scientific equipment, systems and facilities to meet the requirements of the cruise programme and participation in cruise planning to identify solutions to scientific and engineering needs. Whilst at sea you will participate as a member of the onboard technical support team with responsibility for the operation and maintenance of NMF equipment as required.

You will have a recognised qualification in one of the following; electronic, electrical or mechanical engineering or an oceanography qualification with knowledge of instrumentation. Alternatively the ability to demonstrate a substantial knowledge and experience of oceanographic instrumentation through employment and training is adequate. You will ideally have practical experience in supporting oceanographic instrumentation in a technical capacity. An interest in, and experience of, working on boats is desirable as is an interest in supporting world class oceanography. You must be prepared to travel worldwide.

This is a permanent position on NERC terms and conditions and the salary is in the range of £19,540 to £23,150 per annum. The availability for sea time of approximately 90 days per year is required for this role, which attracts a daily allowance. Additional allowances may be available to exceptional candidates.
