PhD students are the lifeblood of any high-calibre research organisation.
The Graduate School of the National Oceanography Centre Southampton is a centre of excellence. We are large, international, scientifically diverse and genuinely multidisciplinary with over 120 registered PhD supervisors and nearly 200 PhD students with backgrounds in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Geophysics, Mathematics, Meteorology, Natural Sciences, Oceanography, Physics.

Our existing PhD students work on cutting edge research problems spanning all aspects of the natural sciences, for example, from Algal Bio-fuels through Life in Lake Ellsworth (Antarctica) to the Sumatran tsunami earthquake of 2004.
We recruit around 40 new PhD students every year to add to our critical mass, drive forward our research agenda and train the next generation of principle investigators, policy advisors and captains of industry.
