Learning and teaching
Explore our resources, from online cruise diaries from our research ships, to multimedia teaching materials and activities that help teachers bring science to life in the classroom.
Free posters
A series of five A1-sized posters about natural processes are available, free of charge, to schools and educational organisations. These were designed by NOC postgraduate students with the help of Southampton school children. For more information and to request your free set, please visit the HERMES project website. The posters can be viewed online, and classroom handouts downloaded as PDFs.

- Open Days The Southampton site hold a public open day called Ocean and Earth Day during Science Week in March each year. This provides opportunities for the public to visit the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton and meet some of our scientists and find out more about our research. The University of Southampton's department of Ocean and Earth Science based at the Centre also holds a four Open Days a year for propective students, usually in early July and early September.
- Marine Life Talks at Southampton The NOC doors are opened to the public every month for the Marine Life talks, where scientists from NOC, from the University of Southampton, and from other local organisations share their research experiences and adventures.
- Seminars at Liverpool A programme of seminars is held throughout the year at NOC Liverpool. These are open to all, but if you are planning to attend please contact the seminar organiser beforehand.
- Discover Oceanography Experience 'hands on' science aboard the Southampton University School of Ocean & Earth Science's research vessel RV Callista. Sessions aboard the vessel, which can comfortably accommodate 26 visitors, offer participants the opportunity to experience a comprehensive introduction to marine science. Sessions can be tailored to suit the needs of individual groups and are suitable for all ages.
- Community Scientists and Neighbourhood Engineers scheme Several of our scientists and engineers are attached to local schools. They visit 'their' schools, assist with particular projects, give talks to the children about their science and attend careers evenings. They also stage mock interviews to help sixth-form students facing this daunting procedure for the first time. The scheme has also resulted in some school groups visiting NOC.
- Schools careers We attend schools career evenings on request. Some of our female scientists also visit local schools as role models to convince the youngsters (and teachers) that a scientific career is equally appropriate to the girls. More information on science for girls can be found at The Association for Women in Science and Engineering.
- Nuffield Bursaries NOC takes part in the Nuffield Bursary Scheme, and some of our scientists have supervised students here who have made a valuable contribution to our research. Two recent Nuffield students helped develop a device that is now being used in our research. The students won several awards with their work, through the Creativity in Science and Technology Award scheme (CREST).
- Ambassador/Aim Higher scheme Aim Higher is a national programme supported by the DfES which aims to widen participation in higher education by raising the aspirations and developing the abilities of young people across the UK. NOC is an active participant in the scheme with Ocean and Earth Science students working alongside teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary schools/colleges in the Southern region. Opportunities exist for our Ambassadors to bring their classroom into NOC at Southampton and onto the water to explore the environment at first hand.
