Current projects

FLOCSAM 2008-2012. NERC funded. Acoustical and optical backscattering by flocculating sediments. The aim of the project is to study the interaction of light and sound with flocculating sediments and the use of light and sound to study the processes of flocculating sediment transport.

HYDRALBVI  EU funded. More than water. WISE-Water Interface Sediment Experiment. Utilsation of newly developed optical and acoustical equipment to study in enhanced detail sediment processes and entrainment in the bottom boundary layer.

COHBED NERC funded. The collaborative research project, will investigate how the presence of cohesive, ‘sticky’ mud within sandy sediment influences the erosion, transport and deposition of this mixed sediment in seas and rivers. 

Projects being worked on

FORMOST 2008-2011. Field ObseRvations and Modelling Of the Sediment Triad. Measurements of hydrodynamics, bed forms and sediment transport, collected in three sedimentary regimes -

  1. the Dee Estuary in Cheshire
  2. Sea Palling in Norfolk
  3. in a large scale flume facility in Holland, are being used to develop and assess sediment transport models

LEACOAST2. The study of shore parallel breakwaters for coastal protection. This project is being carried out at Sea Palling in Norfolk.

Delta flume.  Measurements and modelling of vortex entrainment over a rippled bed. Formation of bed forms under waves. Measurements of sediment diffusivity under waves.

Dee experiment.  Measurement and modelling of sediment transport in the River Dee estuary.

Research interests

For two decades I have been conducting research into advancing the application of acoustics to the measurement of sediment transport processes. I have been involved in developing the theoretical framework for understanding the interaction of sound with suspensions of marine sediments and inversion techniques to extract sediment parameters from the backscattered signal. I have been engaged in the development of coherent acoustic Doppler profilers for measuring near bed turbulent and intra-wave hydrodynamics. I have also been associated with the development of acoustic ripple profilers and rotary scanners for studies of bed forms. Recent studies have been on acoustic measurements of intra-wave vortex entrainment of sediments, convective-diffusive modelling of suspended sediments, diffusivity studies over rippled beds, a review of process modelling and analysis of the scattering properties of suspensions of sandy sediments and cohesive flocculating sediments.
