Leadership team

Members of the NOC Executive Board between them have management responsibility for all of the Centre’s budget and their responsibilities span the full mission of the Centre.  The Board also comprises the key lead professionals who provide the Board with advice concerning finance, human resources and communications.

    Executive Director: Professor Ed Hill

    OBE, BSc (Sheffield), MSC, PhD (Wales) HonDSc (Sheffield)

    Ed took office as Executive Director of the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in April 2010 and has overall responsibility for the management and leadership of the Centre.  In that capacity he is a member of the Executive Board of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).  He is also a Professor of Oceanography at the University of Southampton.

    Director of Science & Technology: Professor Andrew Willmott

    BSc (Bristol), MSc and PhD (UEA)

    Professor Andrew Willmott is the National Oceanography Centre’s Director of Science and Technology. He took up his position on 1 July 2010 and is based in Liverpool.

    Andrew is responsible for strengthening the world-leading research capabilities of the NOC and its international and UK collaborations; integrating scientific research and technology development and building the scientific collaborative links with the Centre’s partners

    Deputy Director Science & Technology: Professor Ian Wright

    Professor Ian Wright is the National Oceanography Centre’s Deputy Director of Science and Technology. The focus of Ian’s role is to recruit, develop and lead a world-class, balanced team of scientists and technologists

    Ian joined the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton in 2008 as a co-chair in the centre’s Geology and Geophysics Research Group.

    Mrs Jacky Wood is  Head of the International and Strategic Partnerships Office (ISPO). ISPO helps to fulfill NOC’s leadership, strategic coordination and knowldege exchange remits nationally and internationally.

    Geraint West is Head of National Marine Facilities - Sea Systems, which is responsible for the provision marine national capability including research ships and deep platforms.

  • Director British Oceanographic Data Centre: Professor Juan Brown

    BSc, PhD

    Juan is the Director of  the British Oceanographic Data Centre, a national facility for looking after and distributing data concerning the marine environment. A Physical Oceanographer by training, Juan has 25 years research experience in estuarine, coastal and deep ocean environments.

    Peter is the member of the NOC Executive Board responsible for the full range of administrative functions - delivered across two sites in Southampton and Liverpool - that underpin the delivery of the centre’s world-leading research and technology.  These encompass:  Finance and business planning; Human Resources; Health and Safety; Information Technology; Research, Contracts and Applications; Facilities Management; Library and archive services; Communications and Public Engagement together with governance, executive and science administrative support.  He also supports the NOC-led partnership that delivers the UK’s national capability in marine science.

    Julie Pringle Stewart is the National Oceanography Centre’s Head of FinanceJulie joined the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton in 2006 from the Natural Environment Research Council’s Corporate Finance Team working on Dual Support Reform with BIS (then DST) and introducing best practice management accounting for sustainability and cost control.
