Our mission

The National Oceanography Centre will, by 2015, be recognised as the world-leading Centre for integrated ocean sciences and technology

Our mission is to offer solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our age - which concern global environmental change and increased human pressures on natural resources.

We are achieving this through scientific and technological excellence combined with broad, systematic engagement with the science community, both nationally and internationally. By understanding the needs of users and working in partnership we will ensure rapid uptake of our research outcomes, methods and technologies by policy-makers, industry and society

We undertake and support world-class research, technology development and training and provide marine science national capability for the entire NERC science community.

Our ambition is that, by 2015, the National Oceanography Centre will be recognised as the world-leading centre for integrated ocean sciences and technology.

Our shared vision

Working with our partners in the NOC Association we have developed a new shared vision statement for the future of marine science. Setting Course – a Vision and Priorities for Marine Research outlines the goals and priorities identified by the marine research community

This vision is for many players in the marine science community - not just one institution -working together, to enable its delivery.
